Yonah Mountain is a monolith—a geological formation of granite gneiss that rises from the surrounding landscape—separate from the Appalachian range of mountains. The landmark peak and its companion, Pink Mountain, are highly visible from the Richard Russell Scenic Highway—a scenic route that crosses the Blue Ridge and provides scenic overlooks—and stand as isolated peaks in the Dahlonega Gold Belt.
Yonah's convenient cliffs provide mountaineering experience for U.S. Army Ranger Units as well as other climbers.
Most of Yonah, which means bear in Cherokee, is in the Chattahoochee National Forest, just north of Cleveland.
