Established in 1758 on the Medway River in what is now Liberty County, the long gone town of Sunbury was once a significant seaport, rivaling the commercial importance of Savannah to its north.
In 1779 during the American Revolution, the British captured Sunbury and the adjacent Fort Morris, which had been built to protect the town. The British remained in control of Sunbury and the surrounding area until the end of the war. At the time of their evacuation, British troops burned both Sunbury and Fort Morris.
After the Revolution, Sunbury was named the county seat of Liberty County. However, Sunbury’s location on the coast was inconvenient for most residents of Liberty County, so in 1797, the legislature designated a new county seat farther inland and named it Riceboro. (In 1836, the county seat was moved again to its present location, Hinesville.) The town of Sunbury eventually disappeared.
For a good look at Sunbury’s significance in the American Revolution, see the Historic Liberty Trail tour.
