Take this do-it-youself walking tour of historic downtown Fayetteville to see Georgia's oldest Courthouse and sites related to Doc Holliday, Margaret Mitchell and other notable Fayette County people.

Fayetteville, the county seat of Fayette County, was established on March 23, 1823. The land for the town was purchased from James M. Post for $800. Larkin Bell laid out the town lots, and #20 was the first lot sold for $20 in 1823. (It is now a parking lot across from the NE corner of the courthouse.) A jail was built in 1824, and construction on the courthouse began in 1826.

A printed map of this walking tour of the historic town is available at the Fayetteville Visitors Center in the old train depot, operated by the Main Street Tourism Association.
