The Goodbread House Bed & Breakfast Inn sits in the center of the quaint waterfront village of St. Marys, America's second oldest city, and the “Gateway to Cumberland Island National Seashore.”
Samuel Burns built the Sandiford-Goodbread House in 1870 and sold to Ralph Sandiford. In 1901, Sandiford sold it to steamboat captain Walton Goodbread. The Goodbread (Gutbrodt) family had come to Philadelphia from Germany in 1731. Descendents of Phillip Goodbread, Sr., migrated south during the war, eventually settling in Camden County. They fought in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 and served in the Confederate Army in the Civil War. In 1918, Kate Brandon Bagwell and her sisters, Sallie, Semora, and Ethel, bought the Goodbread House from the family to house the overflow of the nearby Riverview Hotel. More recently, the Goodbread House served as Dixon's Boarding House, serving family-style lunch and dinner to locals and visitors alike. It was renovated in the early 1980s, and today, retains the charm of its original 1870s architecture.
The Rhett and Scarlett Suite
Rooms at the Goodbread House are named after famous lovers. Paintings of the famous hero and heroine of the Margaret Mitchell classic Gone With the Wind as portrayed by movie actors Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh hang over the bed in the Rhett and Scarlett Suite. A double fireplace extends into an oversized bath, which is adorned with a vintage claw tub and step-in shower. The suite, which is on the first floor of the house, faces the front porch where swings await guests.
The Guinevere and Lancelot Suite
The Guinevere and Lancelot Suite is upstairs facing the veranda. A suit of armor stands in one corner in this warm and cozy room in hues of reds and golds. It features an oversized bath and distinctive pine furniture.
The Gabriel and Evangeline Suite
The Gabriel and Evangeline Suite is located upstairs in the rear of the house for extra privacy. Two Queen beds and a claw-footed tub/shower in an oversized bath accent this suite complimented by antiques and stained glass.
The Gable and Lombard Suite
Upstairs, facing the covered veranda, the Gable and Lombard Suite has the easiest entrance. The spacious soft blue and green room has a California king sized bed, heart plank floors, and a brick fireplace.
The Lucy and Ricky Suite
Perfect for families, the Lucy and Ricky Suite has two double beds and adjoins the Rhett and Scarlett Suite. There is also a private bath with shower.
The Bogie and Bacall Suite
The Bogie and Bacall is a private suite with its own foyer. A classic fainting sofa graces the intimate space in this quiet corner of the Goodbread House.
