Just three quarters of a mile west of the Chattahoochee River near Columbus lies the reconstructed Fort Mitchell, built in 1813 along the Federal Road which opened traffic to a territory later to become the state of Alabama. Fort Mitchell, an important post of the Creek War of 1813-1814, was built in what is now Russell County, Alabama, by troops under the command of General John Floyd.
