President George Washington appointed Benjamin Hawkins "Principal Temporary Agent for Indian Affairs South of the Ohio River." in 1796, a position he held until his death in 1816. Although Hawkins was agent to all Indians in the South, he chose to live among the Creek Indians at an Indian Agency that he built on the Flint River in what is now Crawford County.
A few hundred yards south of the GA 128 Bridge is one of the most historic landmarks on the Flint River. It was here that one of Georgia’s most fascinating, but historically ignored, personalities made his home and served both his country and his Indian neighbors. His name was Benjamin Hawkins and on the gently rolling hill on the east bank overlooking the river is where he built the Creek Indian Agency. Read more about Hawkins in the blog below and view an INTERACTIVE MAP showing the location of his grave site on the Flint River and the monument to him in Roberta.
