Named For General James Edward Oglethorpe, founder and first governor of Georgia In History The city is located on the former site of the U.S. Army Post at Fort Oglethorpe (1902-1946). The "Fighting Sixth" Calvary was station here from 1919-1942. After World War II, it was too small to remain open and was sold to private investors.
