Pronounced "All-ben-ny" or Al-bain-ny" Known For Being the "Quail Capital of the World." Huge bob-white quail-hunting plantations line both banks of the Flint River all the way from Albany to Bainbridge What Most People Don't Know The Flint River, which flows through Albany, got its name because it was a good source of flint stone from which Indians made arrowheads, tools and blades. They called it "Thronateeska," meaning "the place where flint is picked up" Notable Natural Feature Radium Springs is the state's largest natural spring In History Between 1828 and 1861, some 130 steamboats loaded with cotton plied the waters of the Flint River between Albany and Apalachicola, Florida. Water levels in the Flint eventually proved unreliable for steamboat traffic and the city became a rail hub for Southwest Georgia after the Civil War Famous Sons and Daughters Ray Charles was born in Albany and lived there until he was six years old. There is a statue of him playing the piano in Riverfront Park Top Annual Events Chehaw National Indian Festival
